Had the best time stopping in at YHA Newcastle Backpackers over the last couple of summers when heading up the coast from Melbourne chasing waves. The hostel is in an awesome location near the main beach of Newcastle (good surf spot). The rooms are a bit older, but the service, location and atmosphere easily make up for that. The common room areas are comfy, lots of activities & are a great setting to socialise with other like-minded travellers. There nothing like an afternoon doze on the chesterfield couches in the common room after a morning surf at the front beach, with a belly full of hot chips from the kiosk down the road. I stayed only one night in a single room but the hostel is great. Very friendly staff. Room comfy and bathrooms very clean. The location is perfect! Excellent!

Great budget option in excellent location. Yha is in a great old building with character. Lots of common area space and kitchen facility. Staff nice, communicative and responsive to issue.

After staying here on and off for 6 weeks, I can confidently say that this accommodation is superb for backpackers and travelers alike. Clean sheets, hot showers with good water pressure, and a well equipped kitchen. Kind and dedicated staff. I experienced almost every room type the hostel has to offer and can vouch for its cleanliness and value. The location is perfect if you love exploring the city and the beach. Free bikes and surfboards at your disposal make for a budget-friendly fun. I love how low-key but inviting this hostel is too. Highly recommend!

Loved staying at this YHA. The location is fantastic! I could see the ocean from my window and fell asleep to the sound of waves every night. It's close to the light rail so it's super easy to get around. The bathroom and common room were clean. I appreciated having access to the storage room after checking out so I didn't have to carry my stuff while going to the beach for the last time on my trip. The staff were kind and helpful. The nightly rate was great - $50 for a bed in a room of 4.

The location of the hostel is amazing. It surrounded by many beautiful cafés and convenient marts. The beach is literally just a few meters away! Mery, the girl at the reception, is wonderful — very helpful, always smiling, and makes you feel truly welcome.

Simply the best hostel I've ever stayed. I have done my 2weeks of road trip and writing this as this was the best one. The clean level, the staff level and the structure of the building was so great so you can meet people and hang out easily while you can also rest in your room with a silence. I met a few amazing people there who I still get in touch with, we enjoyed playing ping pong and have a chat in the huge kitchen! The staff were so welcoming and always give you some tips for travel, I met Ieva and Marie and both of them were amazingly friendly and helpful! Thank you for giving me such good memories, I would come back 100%.

Much like the city it's in, it's a cozy spot that quickly feels like home. There's no better place to lay your head while you discover and fall in love with Newy. Though I obviously haven't been in the hostel the entire time, I've seen a 2 day trip become a year in town instead. A large part of that change of plans was due to the initial experience and lifestyle the YHA and it's incredible staff allowed me. From the moment I stepped in and met the wonderful Cata at reception, it's been the most welcoming travellers' den I've yet to see. Also, a minute walk from the beach. I mean, c'mon.

My friend and I stayed in YHA Newcastle for a few nights as a stop over during our east coast tour and it was the perfect 2nd location. The hostel was very homey and the staff were beyond friendly and helpful. The check in was super easy (especially as we arrived late and reception isn’t 24hrs), the hostel isn’t too big so we found our room easily and the rooms were spacious with showers close by. The kitchen was big and fully equipped, with lots of space for all our stuff and it was cleaned every morning. The male receptionists were especially kind and helped us sort out an issue we had with our payment as we booked through an external company and showed us how to use the washer and dryer. Unfortunately there is only one toilet on the downstairs floor and two showers but later learnt there were more upstairs. It is a very friendly hostel and on our last night they hosted a free BBQ. They also are very happy do you to use the facilities once you have checked out—which is the best news for any backpacker! They are also very knowledgable on things to do and happy to help. We couldn’t recommend this stay more. If you’re looking for a low key, homey hostel YHA Newcastle Beach is the pick for you.
